When I adopted Arya via DIBS Rescue, I never knew it would lead to the amazing journey I have been on with her rescue organization.
Volunteering Is So Rewarding
A few months after adopting Arya from Mexico, I saw that her rescue (DIBS) was looking for phone screen volunteers. I instantly signed up as it felt like a way to give back to them for introducing me to my amazing girl.
After multiple phone screens with potential applicants, I saw that they also needed fosters to temporarily home dogs as they come from Mexico and wait to be adopted. Well, you guessed it, I signed up! Fast forward two years and I have now fostered 10 dogs and volunteered in many other ways (social media, donation drives, taking dogs to vet apps and more).
I cannot verbalize how special it is to play a role in this cause, and to know that 10 dogs are in their loving homes simply because I raised my hand to welcome them here! They have all been so sweet, unique, playful, and deserving of love. Allowing them to travel to Canada means that the shelters in Mexico have an open spot to save a dog off the street, and sadly, only 1 in 10 rescue dogs make it.
If you've ever thought about fostering, volunteering or adopting, I would be happy to chat further with you or answer any questions you have! While it is challenging, it is totally doable regardless if you live in a condo, are busy, have pets currently etc. And no, I do not want to keep all of them ;) (this is often a question that comes up!).
Most importantly, volunteering is so rewarding, and whether you enjoy helping seniors, kids, animals, new immigrants, the environment.. find 'your thing' and spend some time helping the cause. I promise that you won't regret it!
